First, We keep wanting to add more categories to try to accommodate older shooters. As it stands now, we have 29 different categories between BB,SB, FP, Air, PH and U500! if we want to add more categories, it may be time to start deleting other categories.

Second, Why is it we are never trying to attract new shooters? I think it may be too late as talking to some new shooters, The biggest detractor is we have too many Categories! Younger shooters are still on limited budgets and still raising a Family. They have limited resources to spend on sports like ours. This many categories scare them away to other shooting sports.

But, without new shooters, this sport will eventually die.

I have nothing against adding a scoped revolver catregory, but we need to remove other categories to accomodate the new categories.

and now, I found a mistake on the Air pistol score card, USIS is missing! :-o :-o
I'm not sure where I stand on all of this. I do agree that 29 categories is a lot, and adding to that number may not be a good thing. I can make a suggestion. Three of the most recently added categories are Practical Hunter. We could easily combine Big Bore UAS and PHLC and also combine Smallbore UAS with PH22. There is functionally little difference in those categories anyway and a simple tweaking of the rules can combine them. I'd strongly like to keep PHSC because it fills a niche that did not previously exist. It give a shooter the ability to shoot a freestyle centerfire gun on a 100 yard range. In fact, PHSC is one of the most popular categories at my home range. This step would open up room for the red dot categories in Big Bore and Smallbore without adding to the total IHMSA category count. One thing is for sure, we do need to find a way to attract and keep shooters, not exclude them.

Every new category that is being suggested already has a category that will accommodate these shooters/ guns/optics ! No need to reinvent the wheel - put these shooters on the line, and let them shoot !

Only difference is that Field Pistol is a standing category - PH is freestyle !

I think this discussion has gotten away from the original suggestion. Just let the dot sights and maybe 1.5X optics in the Production and Revolver categories. Don't need new categories. Just go back to Jim's original suggestion. Do we want to make rules more simple or more complicated????? Pretty soon we are going to have our organization regulated out of business and scare off any potential new shooters. Keep things simple!!!
