A greater challenge. Since the targets are roughly 1/4 the surface area of a full size target, they are much harder to hit, thus making it a more interesting challenge. Simple as that.

That is easy - the purpose of Half-Scale is to ruin an otherwise good shooting day !! -- (just kidding !)

Thanks for the answers. I guess the next question is why keep full size? Perhaps it is for "old farts" like myself?

Full-scale is still difficult for most shooters. There are far more non-perfect scores shot in Big Bore than perfect ones. And, for whatever reasons, there are those who will never shoot a perfect score on the regular targets, so it remains a challenge, to do better than the last time they shot.
Some folks don't have a place to practice, others don't have the time to shoot a lot. Some will never master the basic skills of sight alignment and trigger control to allow them any consistency. But all this won't stop folks from shooting.

In the old days, we didn't have half size targets, and we liked it that way. Plus we had to walk to matches in the snow, uphill both ways.
It seemed that unlimited shooters would frequently shoot 40, and would require shootoffs. Some of our local shooters could shoot 40 or close in production, and I'm sure at a big match there would be lots of 40's in production. Under these conditions it would be worthwhile to use half size targets to make the game more difficult. I don't know what it is like now in revolver, but maybe revolver and certainly in standing, the full size targets are appropriate. Of course I'm talking about the "old days" when everything was open sight.
Also I seem to remember stories of itty bitty targets being used at the big matches in shootoffs- things like painted snuff cans, small plaster animals, etc.
