Finally we had a nice day for shooting, although it might have been a little bit too hot for some folks. It was great to see Jerry and Judy from Illinois make the trip to shoot with us. Also Greg was able to come up from Anderson County for the day. We had a few more shooters and everyone shot a couple of guns.
Tom Wood led the way in Big Bore with a 40 X 40 and then another 40 X 40 re-entry. Joe Puffert couldn’t believe he missed #4 chicken, but it was still standing when he got done. Upon closer examination, we found that the bullet actually went through the hole that is in our chicken—put there by some unsupervised person on the range when they were not supposed to be, using a high powered rifle. The chickens were freshly painted before he started shooting and you could definitely see marks around the hole. That’s one of the stranger ways to miss a chicken. Larry Egan was our only other big bore shooter and started off clean until he had a little trouble with a couple of turkeys.
We had a little more competition in half scale this month. Walt Sweet led the way with a fine 37 and 7 shoot off targets. Joe Puffert shot half scale for the 2nd time and bettered his score by 1, having some real problems with the chickens. You can bet he will be practicing them on open practice day! Greg Rhineheimer also tried his hand at our half scale critters.
In .22 class—I can finally say it—The top score was ME with my first ever 40 X 40!!! (plus 4 out of 5 shoot off targets). It’s been a long time coming and there have been a lot of 39’s on the way. I couldn’t have done it without my dad, my “coach” who keeps me focused and takes care of my guns and all that other important stuff.
Greg Rhineheimer had a very nice 39, missing only number 1 turkey to lead the way in UAS-INT class. Walt and Joe both had 34’s but Walt had one more ram to win on reverse ram count. They both had sight setting problem—like starting out at the wrong spot. Jerry Stringham had a fine 38, leaving only 2 turkeys standing. Bob Baur finally had a nice day to try UAS and ended up with a 33. Just needs to practice the rams a little more.
In Unlimited Standing class, Jerry Stringham led the way with 28 and Judy Morris had the top score in US-A.
We also actually had 3 field pistol shooters this month. I had the high score with a 16 and Bob had the high score in his class with a 13.
We finally had an entry in the new practical hunter category. I tried out my trusty old short barreled TC 7 and knocked down 37.
We have 2 matches next month—Saturday, June 11 and Sunday, June 26. Hope to see you there.
