A (somewhat) large turn-off for many potential new shooters is the (apparent) difficulty with hitting IHMSA targets. Other disciplines have much larger targets at shorter ranges (looking at IPSC and cowboy). If more favorable targeting was available, maybe new shooters would begin and then realize that they can compete at the more difficult stages that exist.

In that regard, has anyone tried a "Novice" competition using BB targets at FP ranges? Since it would be geared for newbies, the guns, cartridges, and targets would be more accommodating. Guns could be restricted to 6" barrels or less (to promote variety and less dedicated guns), cartridges restricted to FP-plus (anything <=1.30"), targets could be fixed/clamped (counting hits) for reduced-power cartridge needs (and only a single animal at each distance). The competition could be expanded into standing and unlimited positions, open and any sights if so desired.

Hello, and yes, some ranges have used full size Big Bore targets at Field Pistol ranges. The LASC club calls it Glock alley.
Primarily for Semi Auto's and short barreled revolvers to get people hooked.

It is a good idea and does have some good results.
