I'm just getting into this, so the classes are a bit unclear to me.

I'm looking to shoot an unmodified 44 Mag revolver, open sights, standing. What class do I fit into?

I'd also like to shoot a unmodified 32-20 or 32 H&R revolver, open sights, standing.

If I pick up a stock 6.5 or 7 TCU barrel, 10", open sights?

It all looks rather simple until you take into account the different classes.

Any help you can offer me would be greatly appreciated.

My first couple score cards had wrong classes written on them. I started last year and when I finally asked about classes it was explained to simplify.

If you shoot big bore standing you will be either standing class or unlimited standing. Your 44 will be standing class. I have a T/C 357 mag with a scope that puts me into unlimited standing.

Revolver, unlimited and production classes are shot laying down (freestyle). Not saying you can't shoot them standing but it will be much more difficult to be competitive.

Your 32-20 and 32 h&r would make great field pistol guns. Field pistol is shot standing. Open sight is 'P' class. Scoped is 'PAS'. You could try these on the big bore course but rams may pose an issue.

The 6.5 or 7 TCU will be standing as well if shot standing.

I shoot the majority of my matches standing so my entries consist of:
Small bore standing - high standard sharpshooter.
Small bore unlimited standing - scoped 10" T/C 22lr.
Field pistol 'P' - 10" T/C 22 hornet.
Field pistol 'PAS' - 10" T/C 30 carbine with a scope.
Big Bore Standing - I have a few options here. Mostly open sight revolvers.
Big Bore Unlimited standing - 8" T/C 357 mag with a scope.

Ask anyone at your local range. They will clear up any score card questions. You will have a good time regardless of classes you end up choosing.

A 10" TC can also be used on Production class. The TCUs of course would be big bore Production but you could fit a .22lr barrel to the TC and shoot small bore Production. The TC is a very versatile firearm. With 14" (and 12") barrels you would be able to compete in the unlimited categories. Regular unlimited allows any safe freestyle position while the standing unlimited or course is shot standing. The unlimited any sight classes were meant for us old timers who need scopes to see the targets. Open sight unlimited guns can also be used in the unlimited any sight classes too but the scoped gun are only for the unlimited any sight classes. Once you get to a match, ask around and you will soon get the idea about guns and the classes. Don't be afraid to ask questions and you will probably be able to shoot other guns just to see what you may want to buy for yourself. By all means use what you have now. The local match director or other shooters will let you know what your current guns fit into. A production legal revolver can be shot in all categories, R, P, S, U, UAS if you really like shooting wheelguns. The small bore classes work the same as big bore. As HP mentioned, FP just has P for open sights and PAS (Production Any Sight) for the scoped gun. Welcome to IHMSA, you are in for some great times with great people. It depends on the particular sight that you have. T/C made several different sights for the Contender and click values differ. I know the older T/C sights had very few clicks per revolution and the click value was rather high. I never owned the later T/C competition sights so I can't comment on them. I have the now obsolete Bomar sights on my Contenders which have much finer adjustments. Can you tell us how many clicks in one full revolution of the sight screw?

That sounds like one of the early sights I spoke of. I can't really tell you the exact click value at 100 yards. It has been many years since I had one of those. Probably at least 4" though, maybe as much as 6". I wish I could tell you more.

I can't find my thread pitch gauge, could probably extrapolate from that by using the formula. I can't seem to get a good read on the actual sight movement with the measuring tools I have. I know the earlier sights on the octagon barrels and others of that era where a good deal more coarse than these.

Assuming a 32tpi screw and a 10" sight radius, unless my math is off, as it often is, the adjustment would very close to 1 minute per click.

I'm afraid that it's going to be much more than an inch in the real world. The only way to know for sure is to shoot it at 100 yards. I do remember when I was shooting rams with my first Contender back in the early 80s with the 12 click per revolution factory sights that there would be times that my spotter would call my shots low, just under the belly. I would add one click and the next shot would be over the back. And I have heard this same story from many other shooters.
My advice is to go to the range and do some testing.

ok, I have attached the following picture.

The sight on the left is a standard TC sight which has 12 clicks per revolution. on a 10" barrel, one click is between 4-5" per click

The Sight on the right is the TC Ultimate sight and has 30 clicks per revolution. one click is right about 1.5" at 100 Yards. This was the finest adjustment sight that TC made.
