For safety reasons (long story) our range does not allow steel targets at 25 yards other than air rifle. We had to fight to keep the 40 meter stands. Three years ago we convinced our BOD to purches us the 1/2 scale pistol cartridge targets. I dont have enough participation to justify asking for a set of 3/8 scale.
If you're just shooting for fun, sanctioning doesn't matter. If you're sanctioning, I don't know how you can classify shooters in SB. SB is 3/8 targets, and you intend to use the larger half-scale. Personally, I would give you a leeway if using 1/2 scale chickens at 40m instead of 3/8 scale at 25y, but the rest of the targets are too big.

Alternative targets was a topic at last years meeting, and has been discussed here in the past. But that calls for a different thread, and is subject to criticism from purists.

If my math is correct a 1/2 scale target is 33% larger than a 3/8 scale. 40 meters is 60% further than 25 so wouldn't that make a 1/2 scale chicken proportionally smaller at 40 meters vs 3/8 scale at 25?

The NRA smallbore rules are 1/2 scale at 40 and 3/8 scale at the P, T, R. but then all NRA Hunters Pistol is shot at half scale where as only IHMSA Field Pistol & PHS is shot on half scale.

Either way we are stuck with 40 meter chickens.

targets are not a problem. where in late 80's and 90's, California had 12 clubs shooting IHMSA. we now have 3 clubs.

There are targets spread out all over this state not being used, so no problem getting a set.

and we do not care about the chickens at 40 Yards/meters. this is probably because of an NRA requirement as they do not allow any steel target closer than that. We are just happy to have another club!
