A few questions from a new silhouette shooter ...

Thanks in advance ... Shooting a Hämmerli Exesse (.22LR) w/ an Ultradot.

1. Is my only option Unlimited Any Sight?
2. Is a red dot considered a scope in IHMSA?
3. In Freestyle, can I shoot prone with my left hand under the grip (I am right handed) and have my left hand resting on the ground? The gun clearly is not touching the ground.
4. In Freestyle UAS, it appears there is an option to shoot 1/2 or 1/5 scale, is this correct? Is there a 3/8 scale option? I’ve seen reference to 3/8 scale, but perhaps this is non-IHMSA.

1. UAS and US would be your options.
2. Red Dots have been approved for IHMSA use this year and are NOT considered scopes since there is no magnification.
3. Sounds like the position you are describing in what we call the "flop". As long as no part of the gun touches the ground you are OK. Having your hand under the gun on the ground is OK.
4. 3/8 scale is probably considered the normal .22lr targets. Not all ranges offer 1/5th scale for .22lr. Most people consider 1/2 size to mean the smaller big bore targets.
By all means bring your gun and ammo to a local match and discuss your options with the local match director. IHMSA members are a great bunch of people and are always willing to help.
You are about to begin having a lot of fun shooting steel with great people.

Red dot (reflex or reflector) sights were allowed on a trial basis during 2018. That trial period expired at the end of 2018 unless something has changed that I am not aware of. OKC Gun Club is allowing them now on production and revolvers but they are non-sanctioned so the scores don't count. It is my understanding that there may be another move at the Internationals meetings to give them another go. I, for one, am for it especially if it brings out new shooters or get retired shooters to come back.

What Contender1121 stated was correct for Production guns but you are asking for your Hammerli which is limited to the Unlimited (iron sights only), UAS and US categories which allow you to use the red dot sight.

Thank you for clarifying that. Production and revolver was where the trial run was allowed. Correct that hey are legal for the unlimited categories and the scores will count.

Thank you. Much appreciated. I tried what I believe to be a modified dead frog tonight ... seemed better for me than the flop. I’ll keep experimenting. And I’ll take your advice and head out to match!

That I cannot answer. There was some off-hand discussion at OKC's match on the 5th. I must confess that I do not know the timing of how such a proposal must be made. Must it be presented before the Internationals or during or????

I'm traveling and don't have rule book, but there is a specific timeline for proposals (i think 90 days prior to annual business meeting) and info MUST BE DISEMINATED to the membership (60?) days prior to vote. There is a long thread on this from summer of 2017. If this is real, we should start a new thread and leave this one to the OP questions.

Rich, Those rules for submitting proposals only apply to us common people. There are definitely some short cuts for rule changes that I am not aware of.
