case length, how often to check?

Post by tim josey »

Do you need to check case length after every firing or is there a normal length of shots. I am shooting the 7mm TCU in a TC Contender 10".

Thanks

i trim after the first firing and check them after about 5 firings. i rarely need to trim though. i suppose the load could have impact on case length, hot or mild load. allen

If you form 7 TCU from military brass or even commercial 223 you will find they all come up short of the recommenced trim length. If you form from 204 Ruger or 222 Rem Mag they will come out long and will need to trim to the recommended length. Depending upon your loads and especially if you are neck sizing, you may find you don't need to trim very often. I never trimmed any brass when formed from military or .223 unless I wanted to get picky and make them all the same length but there was never any danger of those cases getting too long since they started out short. 7 TCU is a pretty good cartridge for case life.
