IHMSA headstamped .357 Maximum ammo?

Post by Coogs »

Someone educate me here. Was this ever loaded ammo, or was it just offered as new brass? Coogs.

I think I have seen these in Dan Wesson boxes. I don't know who loaded them.

As far as I know, it was just sold as new unprimed brass. It was made for IHMSA by Federal. Federal also offered one factory load, using a 180 grain JHP, in nickel brass, but with the F C 357 MAXIMUM headstamp. Later, they changed the headstamp on the unprimed brass to F C 357 REM MAX.

Also, when Elgin originally designed the cartridge he had Federal make a bunch of brass that had 357 SM as a headstamp since that is what Elgin called it. Don't think that brass was ever offered as loaded ammo.

Remington Factory loaded a 158 and 180gr, I just picked up 4 boxes of the Dan Wesson, 170gr Sierra JHC's loaded by New York International Corp. I think I have a box of 180 gr Federals somewhere. So Federal did not load the IHMSA headstamped case?
If someone out there has a new box or two of it they wouldn't mind parting with, drop me a PM, Thanks, Coogs

Sorry, I only have one box that is in my collection which I am keeping. The best I can do for you, if it helps, is show you a picture of it.

80x80, so Federal DID LOAD the IHMSA headstamped ammo, not just offer it as brass? Coogs.

Federal did load the 180 grain JHP in nickel-plated brass with the F C 357 MAXIMUM headstamp, the second from the right in the picture.

What I thought you were referring to was the nickel-plated brass that Federal made for IHMSA with the IHMSA headstamp and the ram silhouette, which was never factory loaded. The IHMSA headstamp is the one on the right.

Those four headstamps are going back a few years!!! Doesn't seem that long ago. I didn't realize that Super Magnum was spelled out on the 357 brass. On the 375 Super Magnum brass it was just IHMSA 375 SM. Bigger case head but less writing!!!
