PRODUCTION ??

Post by 686 »

I have a tc factory forend for a 14" barrel. Can i use it on a 10" barrel for production ? If i order an after market catalog item forend with a hanger bar, can that be used in production? If a forend has 2 screw holes and you use it on a 10" barrel is that ok? I am just trying to be correct when i go to the int.

The original ruling is that the 10" fore end is specific to 10" barrels only. A T/C manufactured fore end for 14" barrels can only be used for 14" barrels. If you use an aftermarket fore end, it can be used for both if the manufacturer catalogs it for both. If not, it can only be used on the barrel for which it is cataloged. Of course, you do not even have to use a fore end on a 14" barrel because it is Unlimited. As an example, I use a 10" fore end on my 14" .22LR Match barrel for US.

Steve, I agree------almost. What you said was very true years ago but I just checked the current rules on this site and section VI A 10 states "The original stock, grip or fore end may be replaced with a stock, grip and / or fore end that is a mnaufacturer's catalog item(s), which fit and attach to the handgun without any alteration to the stock, grip or fore end or handgun". Since a 14" fore end will fit a 10" barrel with no alterations, wouldn't it now be legal under the current rules??????? I'm sure some legal eagle will think that extra hole in the 14" fore end will be considered a "shooting aid" and it will not be allowed. I wonder how many people shot 40s because the extra hole was there??? Sorry for the sarcasm but this should be a no brainer since the fore end in question comes from the original manufacturer. How much more compatable can you get? I will defer to a more official verdict since I tend to take the practical view of things and not the twenty dollar legal view. 686 - You might as well break down and get a 10" fore end since you will probably be allowed to shoot at many ranges with the 14" fore end then be denied at many others.

As I understand it, catalog item means for that barrel. Maybe we need an official ruling from the chair of the Rules Committee?

Personally, as a match director I would not say anything cause I want shooters and do not see it as a competitive advantage.

I agree with 260striker. A literal interpretation of the rule as it is written right now would not exclude the 14" forend. It says "catalog item" and "fit without alteration". That's pretty plain English. My opinion.

I know I offended a shooter years ago who presented a Production TC with the early style silhouette sight with the wheel with four different notches. He had replaced the stock screw for the little wheel with a hex head screw since the original had fallen out. I just pointed out his gun was no longer Production legal according to the rules and he was still welcome to shoot at our match. He told me he had shot that gun at many other clubs and had never been told his gun was not legal. Long story, he got mad, left and never came back to our club. I hated to even tell him his gun no longer conformed to the rules. That is the type of "infraction" that really burns me too since there is absolutely no advantage to using a different screw as a replacemnt. Rules need to apply common sense. Now that many local clubs are more relaxed and shooting many side matches, our rules should be reviewed and brought up to more current conditions. Case in point, ported barrels not legal in Production due to safety but now allowed in the new Hunter category. How is Hunter more safe than Production????????? Back to the fore end. Shoot a 14" TC fore end at our club with no problem but be prepared to possibly be challenged at other clubs.
