Taco Hold

Post by ole95 »

I had a problem with a tooth pull yesterday and confined to the house and bored so I started this post. 19 Turkeys I would like to say the bad grammar is from pain med. But it’s this bad all the time. :ymblushing:

The and or You’re History of the Taco hold
I got to thinking about this after some decision about the Taco Hold on another thread.
So here’s mine
I was away from the sport of guns for over 20 years and there have been big changes
Back in the yearly 80’s our local pistol club a had a few matches of what we called Metallic Silhouette using square steel plates. So last year when I went to my 1s. real silhouette match it was a little eye opening to say the least. I guess one of the reason to go was after reading the rules and seeing that the 22 hornet was very popular in a class called Field Pistol and just so happen I had a contender I bought new in 1979 that sported a 10” Hornet barrel. I also found that I could shoot “Field Pistol” in Ga. 5 1/2 hours away. After countless e-mails to a couple members there (thanks Chris( RockinHRacin) and Randy) .I got up my nerve to go. After Chris helped me get started shooting my single six in SB revolver (I think my score was 6)( and best I remember Chris shoot a 40 with his charger). It was time for the Hornet but not the Taco hold after shooting my 1st. round of PAS And not much better that my SB score. A gentleman came up to me and said
“you mite as well learn the Taco hold cause if your going to play this game sooner or later your going to it” That man spent the next 1hr. teaching me the Taco hold . That man was Richard Pickering whom I’ve also heard him called “the dean if silhouette shooting “. And now has become(via e-mails) my Mentor (good teacher, bad student). I’ve still only used the Taco in that one IHMSA match but have used it in 5 NRA matches (they use it too). I’m still in the learning mode and I still get weird looks at the public range were I practice. But all in all for long range standing I have to give it a YES
Now to the point:
I’m interested in not only your history but the History in general of the Taco hold
You that have been doing this for years and seen changes what is your view of the Taco hold the good the bad and the ugly
When did people (or you) start using it?
Which came first using the Taco hold or adding the hornet and others to Field pistol calibers

Bored at home ole95 b-(

I don't have a gun conducive to FP where I could use the Taco Hold. My Ruger MK III with a red dot wouldn't knock em down if I could hit em. But it sure looks like it would be fun to try.

Not really a good way to hold Taco with open sights unless I'm missing something :-\ There is no standing any sight category in SB

someone correct me if I'm wrong on this but I ask a state director

and I had also read this post

Here is the breakdown of all the standing disciplines.

1. Standing. Shot with a Production legal handgun equipped with iron sights. These sights can be a rear peep with a front post or a rear peep with a front aperture (generally an acrylic disk with a hole drilled in the center). Since peep sights are held close to the face, this setup would not be practical in Big Bore as you would be wearing the rear sight in your forehead. Standing is shot in Big Bore, Small Bore and Air Pistol.

2. Unlimited Standing. An Unlimited pistol equipped with a red dot or rifle scope shot from the standing position. Rifle scopes are generally mounted using a Ken Light mid rise or high rise scope mount. (http://www.kenlightmfg.com for this mount setup. Unlimited Standing is shot in Big Bore, Small Bore, and Air Pistol.

3. Unlimited Standing Iron Sight. Shot in Air Pistol only with an Unlimited pistol equipped with iron sights.

I think and could be wrong on this in SB you can use "optic" in any class BUT production, standing and unlimited
I'm not sure about Revolver

OK, I think I figured this out. Nowhere in the rule book does is specifically say if an Unlimited Standing gun can be shot with a scope or red dot. (Can you say, "gray area") All other Any Sight categories end in "AS". The only place that it can be deduced is on page 14, section B, item 4 - Weight shall not exceed the following:

B) Unlimited Standing, Unlimited Any Sight and Unlimited Any Sight Half Scale categories: 7 lbs including optical equipment, unloaded, with magazine.

Through this rule/statement it appears that optics are allowed on an US gun.

That being said, my MKIII with the cheap red dot still wouldn't be my first choice. :ymsigh:

Unlimited standing has been a any sight category since it's incemption. Open sight taco hold is very popular in Field Pistol, SB and even BB standing. Long hooded front sights are used with either a post or aperature. The rear can either be an aperature type or a Bomar type with a very narrow notch.

I don't know when that was because I have been out of shooting until the last year. Again though, if you read the rules which is my only source of info, the only place it's mentioned is in the weight limits. In my opinion to follow the general rule of classifications it should be listed as USAS :-?
