I have this nice barrel for my Contender from the T/C custom shop. Am I right that it will only qualify for use in Unlimited shoots? Anyone else use this caliber?

Re: 12 inch K Hornet barrel
James, I believe the current Big Bore Production category is limited to barrels equal or less than 10 3/4 in. This excludes 12 in barrels and forces them into Unlimited or possibly Unlimited Standing. In Field Pistol the barrel length rule mirrors that of Big Bore----plus while the standard Hornet is approved the K-Hornet is not. Your barrel would be usable in the Big Bore Half-Scale category. While usable it is likely marginal in ability to knock down the 200 meter rams. These are the Field Pistol targets but placed at Big Bore distances.
For these reasons the K-hornet is almost never seen in IHMSA. Assuming you have the frame, many other barrels, which are berrer choices are available. Tell us where you are and someone can help you with a more suitable choice. Richard.

Re: 12 inch K Hornet barrel
Thanks for the info. I have a 10" 357 barrel, which seems to be a lot more useful for this sport. Do you have suggestions for a second fun caliber? I'm considering smallbore as my next step. I live in WV, but could make the matches in Pickaway/Circleville, OH on occasion. Have yet to compete, however.

Re: 12 inch K Hornet barrel
James, your 10'' 357mag is suitable for field pistol or big bore. You can enter Production, Standing and Unlimited using issue sights. You could scope it and enter Standing--Unlimited and Unlimited--Any Sights. You do run somewhat a disadvantage in the Unlimited category in sight radius. Your load and its grouping ability will determine a lot. Most 357 loads favor a 180 or 200gr bullet. Driven at 1100 to 1200fps they offer adequate momentum for all targets. For FP use you probably want to adjust your load down. It is easier on you and the targets. Richard.
